ABOUT YOUR VISIT
Preparation for your appointment
Depending on the type of ultrasound exam, you will need to prepare yourself accordingly. For some scans you may be asked not to eat or drink for 8 hours before your appointment. For other scans you may need to drink up to five glasses of water one hour before your scan; you should avoid emptying your bladder before the scan.
Ultrasound exams are painless; for exams where a probe is inserted into an opening of the body there may be a small amount of discomfort.
Most ultrasound exams will be completed within 20 minutes, although lengthy exams may take up to 30 minutes.
After the scan is completed, you will be asked to wait while your ultrasound report is being compiled, which you will need to take back to your doctor. Your doctor will give you a detailed explanation of the findings.
